This is easy one day long pleasure trip by boat. Easy reach of both ends of route by bus from Riga. In summer's low water (photo) Abava hub has to be scouted by the right bank of the river.

Places to see. Major one is Abava hub. You can optionally visit Sabile and the park of Pedvale.
Two kilometers downstream Abava Hub (from the right bank) outfalls a creek Virbupe (also known as Kārona, Jāšupe, Svente). Not far from it's mouth sightworthy ruins of Svente mill (built in 1909.) are located. About 200 m upstream river Abava you can spot renewed millers house “Sventes”. Opposite the house in 1948 there has been arranged a cableway across Abava. It's called also the air tram of Sabile. For admirers of extreme feelings for a symbolic fee it is possible to try out how it works. Nearby is located a facilitated campsite.
Near the finish at Veģi we recommend to see the waterfall of Veģupīte (1,7 m high).

There is no necessity to bull through the rugged terrain of creek Veģupīte. The easiest way to reach it is by Riga – Kuldiga highroad. 600 m after Veģi turn, direction Kuldiga, there is an pipeline bridge across Veģupīte. 50 m bellow the bridge you will spot the waterfall (photo; snapshot in autumn's highwater)
Transportation and reach of the route:
There is a good enough bus traffic to and from Riga thus it is possible plan to and from arrangements by bus. For reference and information on bus traffic visit 1188. |
