Gauja: Jaunpiebalga - Vireši
>> section Sigulda - outfall into the sea
>> section Valmiera - Sigulda
>> section Vireši - Valmiera
>> section Jaunpiebalga - Vireši
>> section Zobols - Jaunpiebalga
Type of the river : This sectionis proper only for "maniac tourism" all season long. Because of hydro-electric power stations river is not proper form common paddling routes - portages will take most of this route;
Recommended type of boats : those you will not feel sorry for;
Gauja section from Jaunpiebalga pending Lejasciems is ex-classcs of Gauja best routes. Unfortunately it is past. As hydro-electric power station has been built, all the swift rivers in section downstream Jaunpiebalga until Paideri near Lejasciems were destroyed – whenever it was technically possible to flush the river, it has been done. Dam is not renovated solely near Velēna. A pitiful sight!

Those contestants of Ultra-marathon 2002, who did not finish distance of the first day till 12 pm found themselves among dry rocks and puddle jumping fish – water has been saved for next day's electricity producing business. Funny, isn't it?
River has been ulcerated and taken away from all lovers of nature, tourists and fishermen. Nor local inhabitants gain any benefit from it. It started as a thoughtless project for rural employment of few and turned into property of some Riga power elite representatives.
We have no routes to advise for this section of river. Pending Lejasciems river is destroyed, but bellow Lejasciems until Silšņi (outfall of Tirziņa) it is complete pond entitled “Long Gauja”, probably proper for fishing, but fish has been knocked out with electricity here.
And finally there are also other paddling routes available.
