River is comparatively large and routes can be started quite upstream (~ 20 km from outfall), but usually paddlers start near Puces or even downstream. Wight of the river – 5-15 m, slope in riverhead 2-3 m/km, not far from river Abava approx. 4-5 m/km. Main obstacles – jams to wind fallen trees and banks, however there are almost no insuperable jams. Occasionally there clears nice riverside scenery. If water is high enough, it's worth to go in spring to get most of the nature blossom. On riverside there are few dolomite, loam and sandstone outcrops. River is similar with fellow river Amula, but prejudicially Imula is more beautiful. Route can be started near Pūces or where river flows close to asphalted road (river can be hardly spotted from road, as it flows through scrubby valley).
Technically most complex section is near outfall, where slope is approx. 5 km and river flows between many small islands. In general duration of the trip starting from Puces in middle water level is approx. 3 hours. Route can be finished in outfall at Abava, but the bank of river here is sharp and there is no good parking place for cars. Thus it's a better idea to go 1 km downstream Abava, where bank is more proper for taking out. There is a small road besides the river. |
